IndieShows Mixtapes :: July 2009

July 1st, 2009 by Billy

In our July 2009 Mixtape you’re going to hear four tracks that we downloaded straight from our new podsafe/radiosafe music section! These tracks are from The Cavalcade, Tori Sparks, The Groundbreaking Ceremony and Eve’s Burden. Upload your band’s music at music.indieshows.net and you just might be in our next Mixtape! We start this Mixtape off a song that pretty much sums up MySpace and we follow that song up with a song titled “Christmas in July” (since this is the JULY Mixtape). Finally, you’ll hear some Experimental Rock and a little dirty language in one of the songs (parents you’ve been warned).

The Tracks::
(Artist :: “Song Title”)

1- Wicked Celtics :: “I Don’t Wanna Hear Your Band”
2- Brian Hartzog :: “Christmas In July”

The largest, student run, radio station in the U.S.

June 27th, 2009 by Billy

I’m taking a break from blogging about bands themselves to make you aware of the largest, student run, radio station in the United States (and they mostly play indie music). Commonly known as Album 88, the station is at the beginning of the FM dial at 88.5 and broadcasts at 100,000 watts! Unfortunately, 100,000 watts, of course, isn’t enough to cover the entire world, which is too bad… this is the only FM station I’ve been listening to lately.

Why? Well, for starters, just check out their specialty programming: http://www2.gsu.edu/~www885/specialty.html It’s impossible to find another station playing this variety. I’m also able to discover a lot of independent music that I otherwise might not of found and I’m able to do this as I drive to work!

What’s sad is the fact that only people in Atlanta and North Georgia get to listen to this station. I’m hoping (may never happen) that one day they will decide to broadcast the station online as well. BUT, even if you’re in a band outside of Georgia (I’m not saying this will happen, I’m sure they get tons of demos in the mail) there is always the chance that your music could get played on, what I think is, the most popular FM indie music station. So check out their website and maybe if your music is good enough, you’ll get lucky and get played on a very large FM station (larger than the pop music stations in Atlanta). Here is their music submission info:

All music submissions must be mailed as HARD copies (CDs or vinyl) and we do NOT accept singles or MP3s. Mail all submissions to:
WRAS-Atlanta
Georgia State University
P.O. Box 4049
Atlanta, GA 30302-4048

Are you a fan of 80s Rock ballads?

June 27th, 2009 by Billy

I was selling an item on craigslist and the drummer of a band called Brother Pudge contacted me. At the time I didn’t know he was part of a band, but after doing some research I found brotherpudge.com. They’ve been around since 1996 and are a group of friends that grabbed their instruments and just started jamming one day and this is the music that came out of it. The band has some talented musicians and the few recordings they have up are good quality. I couldn’t find a whole lot of information on the band and their main website seems to still be under construction here and there… it could possibly be a fairly new site. But, if like mysterious bands that have music with awesome guitar solos, and those 80s Rock ballads (like you’d hear from Air Supply and Journey) then I would think that you’d like these guys. I’m betting they are a fun band to go and see live… they have a few live events coming up, including one on the 4th of July. I hope they get more content (bio, videos, more songs, etc) up on their site, until then I don’t have much more to write. But, I wanted to throw this up real quick in case there are any fans of 80s type Rock ballads in the house. I’ll admit, I personally love me some Air Supply or Journey when the moment is right. So get your makeup and dancing shoes on ladies and crank up some pudge!

Alternative Rock with a lot of SOUL!

June 25th, 2009 by Billy

Michael Jackson’s passing got me thinking about music with soul/feeling. Some artists have it, and some don’t. Quick, name 3 of the top singers of all time: 1) Freddy Mercury, 2) Michael Jackson, 3) Whitney Houston. Whether you like the artist or not, you can’t deny their talent and impact on the music industry.

Just like you can’t deny those popular artists impact, I can’t deny the following group the praise they deserve. I found this band simply because they entered our online battle of the bands contest. They are in the current battle which ends on June 29th. The song they submitted made me want to hear more. I don’t know if this will be a compliment to the group or not, but this is what I thought when I heard “Rock N Roll 2 Me”. I thought, “Hmm, the lead singer’s vocals sound like a young Michael Jackson.” I know the lead singer is female, but Michael’s voice as a kid was so high it could pass as female vocals. In short, Katherine, from the band Crimson Heart Replica (CHR), has got soul. The entire band does for that matter.

The band is from Jamaica, although you wouldn’t think that right away. You hear “Jamaica” and you automatically think “Reggae”. Well, CHR is trying to change that stereotype with their more Alternative Rock sound. They still have that Jamaican influence though which is where the soulful part of their music comes into play.

I also like the attitude this band has. The following is a quote from their MySpace page: “We don’t follow the crowd… CHR has remained true to the essence of why it is that they make music in the first place. Call us artistes, call us young entrepreneurs. But we give our all into this pursuit of a musical career. There’s no glitter and glam surrounding us. There’s only the hunger.”

I’ve chosen the song they submitted to our battle of the bands to include in this post below. It’s a little different that a lot of their music because it’s acoustic, but I think you might enjoy it.

Brenda Janz new album, You Carry Me

June 20th, 2009 by Billy

Brenda Janz is an artist from Canada and she’s been singing and writing her whole life, however, this is her first album! But as the old saying goes, all good things take time. Her inspiration for this album was of course religion mixed with the experiences she’s had in life.

She has a real down to earth, soothing country vocal style and every sample of her album that I listened to made me want to hear more. The musicianship and overall songwriting abilities on this album are top notch. I chose one of the more “Rock” sounding tracks “Mama’s Prayer” to include below because, it’s one of my favorites and it really gives you a good sense of what you’re getting with this album. Great vocals and harmonies, professional quality recordings, catchy melodies and a wide range of instruments. They really paid attention to detail by adding multiple layers like different guitar parts and subtle things like a little organ here or there. Well done!

A lot of work, experience and raw talent went into this album. If you’re down in the dumps and looking for some inspiration, maybe Brenda Janz is what you need.

HOLY HOLES! The Holes Free Album.

June 18th, 2009 by Billy

An automatic hit!

The Holes recently decided to give their self-titled album away for free! This is an interesting approach and some are for this technique, yet others are against it. But, we don’t have time to debate whether or not it’s a good thing to give your music away. We (IndieShows) feels like it’s an excellent idea. Make your money off of shirts, concerts, etc… but give the music away for free. This technique may help an indie band rise in popularity a lot faster.

Anyway, since the new album is free, I naturally downloaded and I’m playing it right now. First of all, this is one of my most favorite types of music. Any kind of Rock music that is 60/70esk, is usually something I’ll like. The over driven guitar and raw rock vocals and over all bad ass sounding attitude are what makes The Holes an automatic hit. The drums at the end of Bweh Bwow are hot by the way. I just got to the end of that song. I told you I’m listening as I type.

I’m going to leave you fine readers with the usual treat. A track to listen to. My choice for you… “Bweh Bwow”. Feel free to stream or download it.

Legion Within’s New Album Released Today!

June 16th, 2009 by Billy

“[Eight] years and three albums into their career, Legion Within are a steadily rising force in the arena of modern music, complete with the KMFDM seal of approval.” ~ ReGen Magazine.

Legion Within’s fourth album, Mouth of Madness, is releasing on June 16, 2009 thru KMFDM Records. Their first formal release with KMFDM Records, Mouth of Madness displays Legion Within as a mature band who have blended darkwave and industrial into their own distinctive genre of dark rock. Mouth of Madness follows up 2007’s the empty men, which had exclusive pre-release online distribution thru KMFDMStore.com.

Founded in 2000 by singer-songwriter William Wilson, Legion Within has weathered a few band-member changes. The line-up for Mouth of Madness, Wilson (vocals, guitar), Shannon Cole (guitars), Erica Butler-Branch (bass), Aaron Nicholes (percussion) and Jasyn Byrum (synth), is their strongest yet.

Wilson’s romantic tenor vocals have been compared to David Bowie and Peter Murphy, while his minimalist and ebo-laden guitar style has drawn more consistent comparisons to Daniel Ash. Cole has been with Legion Within from its inception. His echoing “whale sounds” guitar style is evidence of his Pink Floyd and King Crimson influences. Long-time member Butler-Branch has been writing with Wilson for seven years. She’s been performing music since five years old, is a multi-instrumentalist (including clarinet and drums) and has played bass in punk, goth and prog bands. Recent additions Nicholes and Byrum create a hard-hitting, electronic and industrial base on which to build. Their modern foundation supports the darkwave soundscapes that Wilson, Cole and Butler construct.

Crafting Mouth of Madness over two years was an arduous process. Written throughout a time when band member’s lives were rife with personal tragedy and upheaval, disquiet lays heavy within the music. The songs range from romance, escapism and tragedy to tongue-in-cheek dark humor and flights of sadistic fancy.

Synth-laden, shimmering and danceable, “Someone’s Speaking” opens the album. An immediate crowd favorite at live shows it had fans dancing during its debut. In the title track, “Mouth of Madness”, dark lyrics about conspiracy and oppression are set against an infectious backbeat and hooky guitar-lines. Both “Golden Voyage” and “Demon’s Arm” reveal classic Legion Within roots thru its fantastic lyrics, swirling instrumental breaks and rolling percussion. “Demon’s Arm” began as a song influenced by Ennio Morricone’s spaghetti-western soundtracks and was completed by recording lilting and sorrowful vocals by Wilson’s mother (a trained operatic singer).

On the haunting and groovy “Try to See Me”, tribal drums, seething guitar and ominous synth-lines surround Wilson’s desperate plea for human connection. Mournful cello and serene vocals paint a gentle grappling with the convoluted array of feelings at a dearly departed family member in “Memories of You”.

But don’t think that Legion Within solely reflects inwardly. They have garnered a reputation for frank political opinions and abhorrence for passivity. “So Happy” is peppy and punky with anti-consumerism lyrics chiding complacency. “Mall Cops of Freedom” is a farcical poke at the reactionary tendencies of a society ruled by fear. Big-band horns and doo-wop backing vocals give a lighthearted rib-jab to the ominous tale. “The Empire is Burning” includes angst-laden shouts by The Angry Mob. The band packed almost 30 fans, family and friends into Jules Hodgson’s Black Lab Studios (where Mouth of Madness was Recorded, Mixed and Produced). For each take, Wilson inspired anxiety by conjuring misery inducing and starkly realistic desperate situations like “Banks are foreclosing on your home! Your family’s fighting for a cardboard box!”

Wilson graduated from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst with a double major in Political Science and Film/Media Studies. The double major was borne from his inability to escape awareness of the manipulation and control via The Media that feeds into political corruption and oppression. Wilson expresses these frustrations and passions fluidly thru Legion Within’s music. Bouncing back from the industrial political-angst of 07’s the empty men, Mouth of Madness embraces the current political and emotional climate with a firm hand. Wilson calls it, “Courageous Nihilism. From day one we are all doomed. But that’s just the way it is, we deal with it.”

Legion Within’s musical evolution has been natural, yet immense. Debut album Ayumi, which was called, “beautiful gothic atmospheres with an airy ethereal feel” (Outburn Magazine), segued into ‘04’s goth-rock-akin-to-The Chameleons-AEONS. As a drastic change in America’s political climate had been boiling underneath, so had a nearly visceral response from key band members Wilson, Cole and Butler. This expression was showcased in ‘07’s the empty men, with tracks titled “Fascisti”, “Rise” and “Wrath of the Empty Men”.

Their prolific history has built a diverse catalog of songs ranging from classic gothic ambience to aggressive industrial anthems. This versatility in live scenarios has allowed them to successfully open for a wide rage of bands including Peter Murphy, Collide, Voltaire, Audra and God Module. Legion Within is looking forward to opening for KMFDM in Fall ’09.

A dark mosaic of musical genres and styles, Mouth of Madness is set to be Legion Within’s breakthrough release. “The crowd response to the new material has been tremendous,” says Wilson. Legion Within has never pursued the whims of trends and have forged a release about which Wilson concludes, “I think we have really tapped into something quite special.”

Here’s the title track from the album for your listening pleasure!

Want your music played on the radio?

June 12th, 2009 by Billy

There are many ways to get your music played on the radio or a podcast. You could get lucky and get signed to a multimillion dollar contract (which is like winning the lottery), you could win some kind of contest which promises to play your song once at 3am on a local radio station, you could break into a radio station and take over holding everyone hostage as you play your songs… OR, you can upload 1 to 3 songs here at music.indieshows.net because radio stations like FatCat Radio and podcasts like the Indie Music Sampler look here for music to play on their shows.

You already know about FatCat Radio if you’ve visited IndieShows before, they are our biggest supporter! However, Indie Music Sampler also recently became friends of ours, to which we say, the more the merrier! “Paul the music lover” runs Indie Music Sampler and do you know why? For the love of the music that’s why! He used to be a DJ and musician and now he runs one of the most popular indie music podcasts around.

So bands, get your music uploaded here because soon FatCat Radio and Indie Music Sampler won’t be the only radio stations/podcasters using IndieShows to find free music to play on air. We all love independent music, and choose to support it because we’ve been there, in your shoes as a struggling artist. So let’s get started people! Post your upcoming shows, post music venues, post your original mp3s, post your music discussions in our forum, leave comments about events, at the forum and here at our blog. I know this blog post has been one big advertisement really, but, it’s only because we are very excited for the future of IndieShows and our partners! By joining together we’re creating something that is bigger than any one single site. We’re going to make the indie music community even better!
